*The service will close at 1pm on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve 2025. It will be closed for bank holidays, and open 9am to 5pm between Christmas and New Year. Open as usual from the 2nd of January 2026.

Discretionary Assistance Fund (DAF) Wales If you are receiving means tested benefits, live in Wales and in Financial Hardship you can apply directly to the Discretionary Assistance Fund Emergency Assistance Payment (EAP) for help with core essential costs like food, gas, electricity,  basic clothing, emergency travel. You have to explain why you need the money and meet the criteria. 

Social Tariffs Cheaper Broadband or mobile phone packages offered by some providers.

Warm Home Discount Money off your energy bill.  You’ll usually get the discount automatically if you’re eligible. Contact the Warm Home Discount Scheme if you do not get a letter this winter and you think you’re eligible. 

Winter Fuel Payment Check if you’re eligible  for an annual one-off payment to help you pay for heating during the winter. 

Water bill schemes Hafren Dyfrydwy and Dwr Cymru have schemes to reduce your bill. Apply online or contact your water company.

Powys Foodbanks For help with essentials (some foodbanks want a referral from an agency like Citizens Advice and others).

Powys Pets In Need  01686 689114 For help to feed your pets when you can't afford to.

Council Tax Reduction 01597 827462 Local authority help with Council Tax bills for eligible residents.

Discretionary Housing Payments If you are currently claiming Housing Benefit or Universal Credit with housing costs element, you may be eligible for further help with your housing costs such as bedroom tax or a deposit.

School Meals and School Uniforms Check if you can get help towards these costs. 

TV licence costs Help with paying your fees and free TV licence for some over 75's. 

Concessionary Travel Cards  Help for over 60's, disabled and some carers.

Citizens Advice Powys can help with

Discretionary Assistance Fund (DAF) Wales Individual Assistance Payment (EAP). A grant for essential household items. DAF can help you or someone you care for to live independently in their home or a move to a new property. A grant is available to pay for white goods, cooking equipment, home furniture such as beds, sofas and chairs. You have to explain why you need the money and meet the criteria and only a trusted 3rd party organisation such as Citizens Advice can apply on your behalf. 

Off-grid fuel. Financial support with your off-grid fuel costs may be available from the Welsh Government Discretionary Assistance Fund (DAF) or Fuel Bank Foundation. Applications have to be made formally via a trusted partner organisation such as Citizens Advice.

  • You need to meet the criteria
  • We need consent from you to make the referral on your behalf.
  • We will need your bank account details.
  • You will be asked to keep receipts for any purchase as proof and spot checks will be undertaken.
  • The award will be made as a BACS (bank transfer) only.
